Then in October 2016, Hurricane Matthew ran directly over the "western claw" of Haiti. As a Category 4 storm, with winds of over 150 miles per hour, over 1,000 people died immediately. Bishop Decoste, in the Diocese of Jeremie described the scene in the wake of the hurricane as “…apocalyptic. Destruction, death, desolation, and despair (was everywhere).”
We came to rebuild a church. We discovered a land of incredible poverty, inhabited by a resilient population that refuses to lose hope. People here waste nothing. Food, clothing and cell phone minutes are all precious commodities given out with care, until fully utilized. Soup and popcorn for breakfast? Delicious!
For our church re-construction project we buy all the materials and services locally. We train a local contractor and supervisors in disaster resistant building techniques through Build Change®. They are a worldwide social change agent that have retrofitted buildings from Nepal to Haiti and beyond with an emphasis on promoting good, safe, affordable construction techniques.
