As the four men from our parish headed to Lori, a region that was devastated by Hurricane Matthew, it was evident that these people have nothing. Their homes were destroyed, the ability to grow their own food was wiped out by Matthew, and they were left with nothing. But still these people continue to live their lives, centered by the family unit and their belief in God. One of the most touching occurrences was meeting with the new mothers of Lori. We sat in front of these new mothers with their new babies in their arms, and talked with them. Their wants for their babies are not that different than any other mother, food, clothing, and the ability to take care of their babies.
As we continued to talk with these mothers, we got a sense of what of what they needed. We presented them with a Layette kit, which was provided by Jean Pease(our contact person) along with other parishioners on this committee, in this kit were many essential that a new mother needs to take care of her baby. Jean has started a Layette ministry, and you will be hearing much more about the Layette kit.
As the meeting ended, we were all touched by how well these babies were taken care of, when it was obvious that these mothers have very little.
